🌊 Summer 2 Curriculum Overview (Year 1)
Welcome to an exciting half-term of learning! This term, our topic is inspired by the seaside, providing lots of opportunities for creative, engaging and hands-on learning across the curriculum.
📚 English
This half-term, we will use The Write Stuff approach to develop writing skills.
- Begin with a Forest School experience to inspire ideas
- Build writing through structured plot development
- Finish with an independent piece of writing
We will enjoy a range of seaside-themed books, including:
Flotsam, The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch, and Tiddler.
💻 Computing
We will explore digital imagery, where children will:
- Plan a photo story
- Take and edit photographs
- Learn how to search for images safely
❤️ PSHE
Our learning will focus on:
- Friendships and kindness
- Families and relationships
- Managing feelings
- Understanding rules and making safe choices
We will also explore how rules help keep us safe and why they are important.
🏖️ History
Children will explore:
- What seaside holidays were like in the past
- How they compare to holidays today
- Why features such as beach huts were important
This helps children develop an understanding of change over time.
🎨 Art
During Art children will:
- Experiment with watercolours and painting techniques
- Learn about artist John Dyer
- Create their own seaside-inspired artwork
🍨 Design & Technology
Children will design their own ice cream sundae by:
- Tasting ingredients
- Designing their own ideas
- Evaluating their creations
This encourages creativity and decision-making.
🏃 PE
- Striking and fielding games
- Ongoing development of skipping skills
