Our Approach to Continuous Provision
At East Ardsley Primary Academy, we believe that children learn best through play, exploration, and meaningful experiences. Continuous provision is a key part of our learning environment in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, both indoors and outdoors.
What Is Continuous Provision?
Continuous provision refers to the carefully planned areas of learning that children can access throughout the day. These areas allow children to explore, revisit ideas, and build on their learning over time. It supports independence, creativity, and deep thinking.
Why It Matters
- Children have time to explore and return to activities, helping them develop confidence and persistence.
- Skills and knowledge are strengthened through repetition and practice.
- It supports emotional well-being and encourages a love of learning.
- It helps children develop important characteristics like resilience, curiosity, and motivation.
Learning Through Play
Our provision is designed to meet the needs of all children, supporting learning across the Early Years curriculum and into Year 1. Adults play alongside children, listening, modelling, and extending their ideas to support progress.
We include a wide range of areas such as:
- Role play
- Mark-making and writing
- Construction (large and small)
- Water and sand play
- Malleable materials (e.g. playdough)
- Workshop and technology
- Music and sound
- Painting and creative arts
- Books and storytelling
- Maths
- Computing
- Food preparation
Children are encouraged to choose where to play, select their own resources, and take responsibility for tidying up. Resources are open-ended, high-quality, and accessible, allowing children to follow their interests and develop independence.
Outdoor Learning
Outdoor play is a daily part of our curriculum. It offers larger-scale, active, and often messier experiences that support physical development and creativity. We provide clothing for all weathers so children can enjoy outdoor learning year-round.
Planning and Progression
Our provision is carefully planned to support progression from Nursery (F1) through to Reception (F2) and into Year 1. We regularly review and adapt our environment to reflect children’s interests and developmental needs.
Working Together
We value strong partnerships with parents and carers. You’ll see your child’s learning celebrated through displays, assemblies, and regular updates. We also invite you to join us for events like our weekly library sessions and celebration assemblies.
